Wikipedia

  1. Semaglutide

Semaglutide (USAN; trade name Ozempic) is a pharmaceutical drug developed by Danish company Novo Nordisk. Originally developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in 2012, it was found in 2017 that it can be used for the treatment of obesity. The drug has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017, and by the European Commission, the Health Canada and the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in 2018. Semaglutide acts like human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) so that it increases insulin secretion, thereby increasing sugar metabolism. It is made as subcutaneus injection, and in prefilled pen. One of its advantages over other antidiabetic drugs is that it has a long duration of action, thus, only once-a-week injection is sufficient.
