  1. Self-acceptance

Self-acceptance is defined as affirmation or acceptance of self in spite of weaknesses or deficiencies. Although this term has been often understood in a common sense way, researchers have defined it formally in terms of positive and negative self-concepts. According to Shepard, self-acceptance refers to an individual's satisfaction or happiness with himself, and is thought to be necessary for good mental health. Self-acceptance involves self-understanding, a realistic, albeit subjective, awareness of one's strengths and weaknesses. It results in an individual's feeling about himself that he is of "unique worth". In clinical psychology and positive psychology, self-acceptance is considered the prerequisite for change to occur. It can be achieved by stopping criticizing and solving the defects of one's self, and then accepting them to be existing within one's self. That is, tolerating oneself to be imperfect in some parts. Counseling and therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness-acceptance based approaches, can help promote self-acceptance to promote change.

Examples of self-acceptance in a Sentence

Having President Obama and the weight of the White House behind efforts to ban conversion therapy is so critical in the fight for transgender and LGB young people, my hope is that when a transgender person's struggle is acknowledged by one of the most recognizable figures in the world, it positively changes the way they view themselves. The pseudo-science that propels conversion therapy cannot match the self-acceptance that comes with this kind of change.

  2. Brene Brown:

The third one, while it wasn't as glorious and easy as the first one, it was the most moving and life changing because of the fact that I used the hike to understand why over the years I was so unkind to myself with weight, it was about self acceptance; it was about knowing what I've been through and my past.

  4. Jennifer Louden:

I define comfort as self-acceptance. When we finally learn that self-care begins and ends with ourselves, we no longer demand sustenance and happiness from others.

  5. Neha Chaudhary:

I love the social media movements that reject the outdated cultural tendencies of putting only certain bodies on a pedestal, self acceptance, self-love, and a positive body image are all really important for promoting our mental health and overall wellness. We should be able to be ourselves, and be ourselves with pride, no matter what that looks like for each of us.
