Wikidata

  1. Selective mutism

Selective mutism is a psychiatric disorder in which a person who is normally capable of speech is unable to speak in given situations or to specific people. Selective mutism usually co-exists with shyness or social anxiety. In fact, almost all children diagnosed with selective mutism also have social anxiety disorder Some researchers therefore speculate that selective mutism may be an avoidance strategy used by a subgroup of children with social anxiety disorder in order to reduce their distress in social situations. Indeed, the current plan is to include selective mutism as a specifier under the diagnosis of social anxiety disorder in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
