Wikipedia

  1. Sears

Sears, Roebuck and Company, colloquially known as Sears, is an American chain of department stores founded by Richard Warren Sears and Alvah Curtis Roebuck in 1892, reincorporated (a formality for a history-making consumer sector initial public offering) by Richard Sears and new partner Julius Rosenwald in 1906. Formerly based at the Sears Tower in Chicago and currently headquartered in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, the operation began as a mail ordering catalog company and began opening retail locations in 1925. The first location was in Evansville, Indiana. In 2005, the company was bought by the management of the American big box chain Kmart, which formed Sears Holdings upon completion of the merger. In terms of domestic revenue, Sears was the largest retailer in the United States until October 1989, when Walmart surpassed it. As of 2017, Sears is the 23rd largest retailer in the United States. After several years of declining sales, its parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 15, 2018.

Examples of sears in a Sentence

  1. Deodatta V. Shenai-Khatkhate:

It's just a folklore that lightning would never strike the same place twice. Last year, on June 30, 2014, three skyscrapers from Chicago were struck by lightning 22 times - 10 strikes to the Sears (Willis) Tower, 8 to the Trump Tower, and 4 to the John Hancock Tower. So be assured that lightning can surely strike any location more than once, and probably at the same spot over and over again, given enough time. It may take as little as few seconds in a thunderstorm, or as long as millions of years - but lightning will eventually strike the same place twice. Be Safe out there!

  2. Efraim Levy:

Most consumers are not aware of positive changes at Sears or Kmart, you need to drive traffic. Otherwise you just keep on seeing lower and lower sales in a vicious cycle.

  3. Philip Emma:

That's the ironic part. You would think that if Sears Holdings still had a core demographic, Sears Holdings would be Mr. and Middle America. But Sears Holdings's not the plan going forward, sears Holdings may underscore the fact that Sears' plans are less about retail and more about the real estate.

  4. Ken Perkins:

Macy's is the primary draw, layer on top of this vacancies from JCPenney, Sears and other regional department store closures, and its difficult to see how many of these malls go forward.
