Local Native Americans called the hot winds coming from the desert "Santana" which was their word for Satan. That's why locals also called these winds "Devil Winds". Please see Santa Ana Register (now Orange County Register) in fall of 1964. There was a front page article asking the public to not confuse the name of their city, Santa Ana, with these Devil Winds, Santana Winds. This article was similar to another article printed in 1916.
