  1. safety island

A safety island, also known as a pedestrian refuge, is a designated area in the middle of a road or street, which provides pedestrians a safe spot to wait when crossing multi-lane roads. This reduces the distance a pedestrian must travel in one go, making crossings safer, especially on busy or high-speed thoroughfares.

Safety Island is a small coastal island 3 miles east of Cape Daly, Antarctica, 6 nautical miles south of Auster Islands, and 0.5 nautical miles northwest of Landmark Point. Mapped by Norwegian cartographers from aerial photographs taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition, 1936-37. First visited in 1954 by an ANARE party led by R.G.
