  1. Potentilla

Potentilla is a genus containing about 180 species of annual, biennial and perennial herbaceous flowering plants in the rose family Rosaceae. It is usually called cinquefoil in English. Potentilla are generally holarctic in distribution, though some may even be found in montane biomes of the New Guinea Highlands. Several other "cinquefoils" formerly included here are now separated in distinct genera. Some species are called tormentils, though this is often used as a shorthand for common tormentil. Others are referred to as "barren strawberries", which may also refer to P. sterilis in particular, or to the closely related but not congeneric Waldsteinia fragarioides.
