    A pocket borough is a term used during the 18th and 19th centuries in England to describe a parliamentary borough or constituency that is controlled by one person, family, or local influence by way of patronage. This person or entity who holds such influence is able to essentially 'pocket' the votes, choosing the Member of Parliament for that borough regardless of the wishes of the general population. They were made illegal by the Reform Act of 1832.
