Wikipedia

  1. Plasmacytoma

Plasmacytoma is a plasma cell dyscrasia in which a plasma cell tumour grows within soft tissue or within the axial skeleton. The International Myeloma Working Group lists three types: solitary plasmacytoma of bone (SPB); extramedullary plasmacytoma (EP), and multiple plasmacytomas that are either primary or recurrent. The most common of these is SPB, accounting for 3–5% of all plasma cell malignancies. SPBs occur as lytic lesions within the axial skeleton and extramedullary plasmacytomas most often occur in the upper respiratory tract (85%), but can occur in any soft tissue. Approximately half of all cases produce paraproteinemia. SPBs and extramedullary plasmacytomas are mostly treated with radiotherapy, but surgery is used in some cases of extramedullary plasmacytoma. The skeletal forms frequently progress to multiple myeloma over the course of 2–4 years.Due to their cellular similarity, plasmacytomas have to be differentiated from multiple myeloma. For SPB and extramedullary plasmacytoma the distinction is the presence of only one lesion (either in bone or soft tissue), normal bone marrow (<5% plasma cells), normal skeletal survey, absent or low paraprotein and no end organ damage.

  1. plasmacytoma

A plasmacytoma is a type of cancer that develops from a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Plasma cells are part of the immune system, and produce antibodies to help fight off infections. In a plasmacytoma, these plasma cells multiply abnormally and form a single mass or tumor. This condition can occur in various parts of the body, but is most commonly found in the bone marrow or in tissues of the respiratory system. If multiple tumors exist, the condition is referred to as multiple myeloma.

Wikidata

  1. Plasmacytoma

Plasmacytoma refers to a malignant plasma cell tumor growing within soft tissue or within the skeleton. The skeletal forms usually have other occult tumors and frequently progress to multiple myeloma over the course of 5–10 years. The soft tissue forms most often occur in the upper respiratory tract, rarely disseminate, and are cured by resection. Most but not all cases produce paraproteinemia. Solitary tumors in bone can be treated by radiotherapy.

Examples of plasmacytoma in a Sentence

  1. Bobby Elesky:

There were times when the air quality was so bad that you would just drop to your knees and throw up, we made jokes at the time because we had no idea how serious it was.’ But Elesky says he found out when he returned home in 2005 and was told during a checkup that he had nearly 20 parasites in his body. More than a decade after his return, Elskey has suffered from myriad health issues, including plasmacytoma -- a condition where rare tumors attack soft tissue in the nasal cavity or bone marrow. He is grateful for the treatment he has received from the VA, but said the bureaucracy was difficult to deal with. Elesky said he was initially denied enrollment into the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs’ Burn Pit Registry -- which was created to research and examine the potential threats from burn pit exposure.
