A pine knot is a dense, often hard, woody section within the trunk, branch, or root of a pine tree where branches or roots have started growing. It is usually easier to notice after the tree has been cut as these knots appear as circular or oval interruptions in the even grain of the wood. They are often used as a source of fuel in campfires due to their high resin content which allows them to burn longer and hotter.
