  1. p-n-p transistornoun

a junction transistor having an n-type semiconductor between a p-type semiconductor that serves as an emitter and a p-type semiconductor that serves as a collector

Wikipedia

  1. p-n-p transistor

A bipolar junction transistor (BJT) is a type of transistor that uses both electrons and electron holes as charge carriers. In contrast, a unipolar transistor, such as a field-effect transistor, uses only one kind of charge carrier. A bipolar transistor allows a small current injected at one of its terminals to control a much larger current flowing between the terminals, making the device capable of amplification or switching. BJTs use two p–n junctions between two semiconductor types, n-type and p-type, which are regions in a single crystal of material. The junctions can be made in several different ways, such as changing the doping of the semiconductor material as it is grown, by depositing metal pellets to form alloy junctions, or by such methods as diffusion of n-type and p-type doping substances into the crystal. The superior predictability and performance of junction transistors quickly displaced the original point-contact transistor. Diffused transistors, along with other components, are elements of integrated circuits for analog and digital functions. Hundreds of bipolar junction transistors can be made in one circuit at very low cost. Bipolar transistor integrated circuits were the main active devices of a generation of mainframe and minicomputers, but most computer systems now use CMOS integrated circuits relying on field-effect transistors. Bipolar transistors are still used for amplification of signals, switching, and in mixed-signal integrated circuits using BiCMOS. Specialized types are used for high voltage switches, for radio-frequency amplifiers, or for switching high currents.

  1. p-n-p transistor

A P-N-P transistor is a type of bipolar junction transistor, which consists of three layers of semiconductor material with alternating P (positive) and N (negative) type dopants. The middle layer (N-type) is much thinner compared to the other two P-type layers and it functions as the base of the transistor. The outer P-type layers are the transistor's emitter and collector. Current in a P-N-P transistor flows from the emitter to the collector. This type of transistor is commonly used in electronic devices and circuits to amplify or switch electronic signals and electrical power.

Examples of p-n-p transistor in a Sentence

  1. Kinngai Chan:

They pushed the can down the road. intel’s 14-nanometer chip transistor speed has always been faster than what any foundry can offer even at 7-nanometer.

  2. Jennifer Rupp:

Unlike a transistor, which is based on binary codes, a memristor can have multi-levels. You could have several states, let's say zero, one half, one quarter, one third, and so on, and that gives us a very powerful new perspective on how our computers may develop in the future.

  3. Tim Doling:

In 1951 the French and their allies had complete control of the south (of Vietnam), so all the real revolutionary activity would be happening in the north, they would have a transistor radio (in the tunnels) and they'd be transcribing news of what would be happening in the north.

  4. Gordon Moore:

It sure is nice to be at the right place at the right time, i was very fortunate to get into the semiconductor industry in its infancy. And I had an opportunity to grow from the time where we couldn’t make a single silicon transistor to the time where we put 1.7 billion of them on one chip! It’s been a phenomenal ride.
