  1. Overfishing

Overfishing is the act whereby fish stocks are depleted to unacceptable levels, regardless of water body size. Resource depletion, low biological growth rates, and critically low biomass levels result from overfishing. For example, overfishing of sharks has led to the upset of entire marine ecosystems. The ability of a fishery to recover from overfishing depends on whether the ecosystem's conditions are suitable for the recovery. Dramatic changes in species composition can result in an ecosystem shift, where other equilibrium energy flows involve species compositions different from those that had been present before the depletion of the original fish stock. For example, once trout have been overfished, carp might take over in a way that makes it impossible for the trout to re-establish a breeding population.

Examples of overfishing in a Sentence

  1. Andy Cornish:

Sharks are in crisis, the demand for shark fin in East and Southeast Asia and for shark meat in other parts of the world are the major drivers for the overfishing of sharks. This is, by far, the biggest cause of the shark population decline. Currently, 100 % of shark fin sold in Hong Kong is from unsustainable and/or untraceable sources.

  2. Andy Radford:

If combined with habitat restoration and other conservation measures, rebuilding fish communities in this manner might accelerate ecosystem recovery, however, we still need to tackle a host of other threats including climate change, overfishing and water pollution in order to protect these fragile ecosystems.

  3. Colin Simpfendorfer:

The tropics host incredible shark and ray diversity, but too many of these inherently vulnerable species have been heavily fished for more than a century by a wide range of fisheries that remain poorly managed, despite countless commitments to improve, as a result, we fear we will soon confirm that one or more of these species has been driven to extinction from overfishing, a deeply troubling first for marine fishes. We will work to make this study a turning point in efforts to prevent any more irreversible losses and secure long-term sustainability.

  4. Shyla Raghav:

There's a lot of rampant overfishing that's affecting fish stocks around the world.

  5. Jay Sirois:

This has to be viewed in the wider picture of the significant amount of evidence available that shows there are other, more important causes of coral decline such as global warming, overfishing, pollution and runoff.
