It's possible that Indians were non linguistic and tried to speak when they heard English men speaking ..someone said "town"and the Indian said..ottumwa...the ts are where it was town....maybe..but we don't know...records are obscure...withheld...sometimes missing...and statistics might be incorrect..too...a lot can happen..impossible things can happen.....but to language..even ottumwa is a valid word.so...it is Indian though ...but...ignorance can't glean the purpose of ottumwa in the state by the name...much less figure out what the name means....

Ottumwa describes a shallow fast-moving river that makes a noise as the water ripples -/the important thing is that noise. Also part of Pottawatomie (Pa-Ottawa-Toomei.

Interesting. I was trying to research the meaning of Ottumwa. Found what might be a close sounding word Ehtamwa which is the Sauk word for "hear" so if going by ottumwa-noc it would be considered "place you can hear" which might loosely indicate the noise of the river. I know that might be a stretch but I saw your comment and was wondering how you derived an importance on noise? Am I close? Lol.
