Wikipedia

  1. nybble

In computing, a nibble (occasionally nybble, nyble, or nybl to match the spelling of byte) is a four-bit aggregation, or half an octet. It is also known as half-byte or tetrade. In a networking or telecommunication context, the nibble is often called a semi-octet, quadbit, or quartet. A nibble has sixteen (24) possible values. A nibble can be represented by a single hexadecimal digit (0–F) and called a hex digit.A full byte (octet) is represented by two hexadecimal digits (00–FF); therefore, it is common to display a byte of information as two nibbles. Sometimes the set of all 256-byte values is represented as a 16×16 table, which gives easily readable hexadecimal codes for each value. Four-bit computer architectures use groups of four bits as their fundamental unit. Such architectures were used in early microprocessors, pocket calculators and pocket computers. They continue to be used in some microcontrollers. In this context, 4-bit groups were sometimes also called characters rather than nibbles.

  1. nybble

A nybble, also known as a nibble, is a four-bit aggregation in computing. It is half of an eight-bit byte. A nybble can represent decimal values ranging from 0 to 15 or hexadecimal digits ranging from 0 to 9 and A to F. Since a nybble is four bits, it can store up to 16 possible values, making it perfect for storing a single digit of a hexadecimal number.

The New Hacker's Dictionary

  1. nybble

[from v. nibble by analogy with ‘bite’ → ‘byte’] Four bits; one hex digit; a half-byte. Though ‘byte’ is now techspeak, this useful relative is still jargon. Compare byte; see also bit. The more mundane spelling “nibble” is also commonly used. Apparently the ‘nybble’ spelling is uncommon in Commonwealth Hackish, as British orthography would suggest the pronunciation /ni:´bl/.Following ‘bit’, ‘byte’ and ‘nybble’ there have been quite a few analogical attempts to construct unambiguous terms for bit blocks of other sizes. All of these are strictly jargon, not techspeak, and not very common jargon at that (most hackers would recognize them in context but not use them spontaneously). We collect them here for reference together with the ambiguous techspeak terms ‘word’, ‘half-word’, ‘double word’, and ‘quad’ or quad word; some (indicated) have substantial information separate entries.2 bits:crumb, quad, quarter, tayste, tydbit, morsel4 bits:nybble5 bits:nickle10 bits:deckle16 bits:playte, chawmp (on a 32-bit machine), word (on a 16-bit machine), half-word (on a 32-bit machine).18 bits:chawmp (on a 36-bit machine), half-word (on a 36-bit machine)32 bits:dynner, gawble (on a 32-bit machine), word (on a 32-bit machine), longword (on a 16-bit machine).36 bits:word (on a 36-bit machine)48 bits:gawble (under circumstances that remain obscure)64 bits:double word (on a 32-bit machine) quad (on a 16-bit machine)128 bits:quad (on a 32-bit machine)The fundamental motivation for most of these jargon terms (aside from the normal hackerly enjoyment of punning wordplay) is the extreme ambiguity of the term word and its derivatives.
