Wikipedia

  1. Neoteny

Neoteny (), also called juvenilization, is the delaying or slowing of the physiological, or somatic, development of an organism, typically an animal. Neoteny is found in modern humans compared to other primates. In progenesis or paedogenesis, sexual development is accelerated. Both neoteny and progenesis result in paedomorphism (as having the form typical of children) or paedomorphosis (changing towards forms typical of children), a type of heterochrony. It is the retention in adults of traits previously seen only in the young. Such retention is important in evolutionary biology, domestication and evolutionary developmental biology. Some authors define paedomorphism as the retention of larval traits, as seen in salamanders.

  1. neoteny

Neoteny, also known as juvenile retention, is a biological concept where an organism retains certain juvenile traits, such as physical characteristics or behavior, even after reaching adulthood. This can be a result of slowed or delayed physical development or an adaptation for survival. Neoteny is seen in various animals, including some species of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

  1. Neoteny

Neoteny also called juvenilization, is one of the three ways by which paedomorphism can arise. Paedomorphism or paedomorphosis is the retention by adults of traits previously seen only in juveniles, and is a subject studied in the field of developmental biology. In neoteny, the physiological development of an organism is slowed or delayed. In contrast, in progenesis, sexual development occurs faster. Both processes result in paedomorphism. Ultimately this process results in the retention, in the adults of a species, of juvenile physical characteristics well into maturity and pedogenesis, the reproduction in a neotenized state. Neoteny is one of three dimensions of heterochrony, or the change in timing of developmental events: acceleration vs. neoteny, hypermorphosis vs. progenesis, and predisplacement vs. postdisplacement. The word neoteny is borrowed from the German Neotenie, the latter constructed from the Greek νέος and τείνειν. The adjective form of the word is either "neotenous" or "neotenic". For the opposite of "neotenic", different authorities use either "gerontomorphic" or "peramorphic".
