Wikidata

  1. Muttonbirding

Muttonbirding is the seasonal harvesting of the chicks of petrels, especially shearwater species, for food, oil and feathers by recreational or commercial hunters. Such hunting of petrels and other seabirds has occurred in various locations since prehistoric times, and there is evidence that many island populations have become extinct as a result. More recently ‘muttonbirding’ usually refers to the regulated and sustainable harvesting of shearwaters in Australia and New Zealand. These include the Short-tailed Shearwater, also known as the Yolla or Australian Muttonbird, in Bass Strait, Tasmania, as well as the Sooty Shearwater, also known as the Titi or New Zealand Muttonbird, on several small islands known as the Muttonbird Islands, scattered around Stewart Island in the far south of New Zealand.

Whether the "muttonbirding" is "regular and sustainable" is subject to interpretation. The so called "harvests" of the muttonbirds include 2 main methods. During the "nanao" "harvest" , the chicks are yanked out of their burrows while totally defenseless and squealing. They are often grabbed by one a wing or a leg after being tortured by hooked devices put into the hole to first start pulling on them. They are not always killed immediately after they are removed from the burrows, as I have seen in videos. Then there is the "rama" where birds flapping their wings outside of the burrows in preparation of their long journey are clubbed to death with flashlights, according to narration that I have seen. This is while the birds are completely defenseless from humans as when in the burrows. Both types of "harvesting" often not done by "aborigines" nor by "maoris" as the case may be. Almost all of the people that I have seen in pictures and videos look like 100% anglo saxons.
