  1. Mojave Desert

The Mojave Desert ( moh-HAH-vee, mə-; Mohave: Hayikwiir Mat'aar; Spanish: Desierto de Mojave) is a desert in the rain shadow of the southern Sierra Nevada mountains and Transverse Ranges in the Southwestern United States. It is named for the indigenous Mojave people. It is located primarily in southeastern California and southwestern Nevada, with small portions extending into Arizona and Utah. The Mojave Desert, together with the Sonoran, Chihuahuan, and Great Basin deserts, forms a larger North American Desert. Of these, the Mojave is the smallest and driest. The Mojave Desert displays typical basin and range topography, generally having a pattern of a series of parallel mountain ranges and valleys. It is also the site of Death Valley, which is the lowest elevation in North America. The Mojave Desert is often colloquially called the "high desert", as most of it lies between 2,000 and 4,000 feet (610 and 1,220 m). It supports a diversity of flora and fauna. The 20 million acres (81,000 km2; 31,000 sq mi) desert supports a number of human activities, including recreation, ranching, and military training. The Mojave Desert also contains various silver, tungsten, iron and gold deposits.: 124 The spelling Mojave originates from the Spanish language, while the spelling Mohave comes from modern English. Both are used today, although the Mojave Tribal Nation officially uses the spelling Mojave. Mojave is a shortened form of Hamakhaave, an endonym in their native language, which means "beside the water".

  1. Mojave Desert

The Mojave Desert occupies a significant portion of southeastern California and smaller parts of central California; southern Nevada, southwestern Utah and northwestern Arizona in the United States. Named after the Mohave tribe of Native Americans, it displays typical basin and range topography. Higher elevations in the Mojave, are commonly referred to as the High Desert; however, Death Valley is the lowest elevation in North America at 282 feet below sea level, and is one of the Mojave Desert's more famous places. The Mojave Desert's boundaries are generally defined by the presence of Yucca brevifolia; considered an indicator species for this desert. The topographical boundaries include the Tehachapi together with the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountain ranges. The mountain boundaries are quite distinct since they are outlined by the two largest faults in California: the San Andreas and the Garlock. The Great Basin shrub steppe lies to the north, and the warmer Sonoran Desert lies to the south and east. The desert is believed to support between 1,750 and 2,000 species of plants. While most of the Mojave desert is sparsely populated, several large cities can be found there including Lancaster, California and Victorville, California, with the largest being Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada.

Examples of mojave desert in a Sentence

  1. Chelsea Peters:

Overall, La Nina typically means less precipitation for the Sierra, Great Basin region, and the Mojave Desert, which is bad for the current drought status and the potential for another active fire season next year, however, the magnitude of the La Nina event will dictate the magnitude of impacts on the winter weather pattern. Considering the current state of ENSO is neutral, La Nina may be weak through at least the early part of the winter season.
