mitral valve prolapse
Mitral valve prolapse is a heart condition in which the two flaps of the heart's mitral valve -- which are responsible for the flow of blood from the left atrium to the left ventricle -- do not close properly. Instead, they bulge or prolapse into the left atrium during the heart's contraction. As a result, blood can flow backwards into the atrium, which may lead to various problems like heart murmurs, arrhythmias or, in severe cases, heart failure. The condition is typically mild and often does not require treatment beyond regular monitoring.

Mitral valve prolapse
Mitral valve prolapse is a valvular heart disease characterized by the displacement of an abnormally thickened mitral valve leaflet into the left atrium during systole. There are various types of MVP, broadly classified as classic and nonclassic. In its nonclassic form, MVP carries a low risk of complications. In severe cases of classic MVP, complications include mitral regurgitation, infective endocarditis, congestive heart failure, and, in rare circumstances, cardiac arrest, usually resulting in sudden death. The diagnosis of MVP depends upon echocardiography, which uses ultrasound to visualize the mitral valve. The prevalence of MVP is estimated at 2-3% of the population. The condition was first described by John Brereton Barlow in 1966. In consequence, it may also be referred to as Barlow's Syndrome, and was subsequently termed mitral valve prolapse by J. Michael Criley.

Mitral Valve Prolapse
Abnormal protrusion or billowing of one or both of the leaflets of MITRAL VALVE into the LEFT ATRIUM during SYSTOLE. This allows the backflow of blood into left atrium leading to MITRAL VALVE INSUFFICIENCY; SYSTOLIC MURMURS; or CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIA.
