  1. lynch law

Lynch law refers to the practice of punishment, usually by a mob, without legal approval or authority. The term is originally associated with a series of extrajudicial hangings committed by a mob in the American South during the 19th and 20th centuries, predominantly targeting African Americans. Lynch law essentially involves a group of people taking the law into their own hands and administering their own form of justice, usually with no fair trial or legal oversight. This can result in severe instances of violence, and often murder.

The Nuttall Encyclopedia

the name given in America to the trial and punishment of offenders without form of law, or by mob law; derived from the name of a man Lynch, dubbed Judge, who being referred to used to administer justice in the far West in this informal way.

Etymology and Origins

  1. Lynch Law

The summary justice meted out to public offenders in the western states of North America. This term was derived from James Lynch, a farmer of Piedmont on the western frontier of Virginia. There being no Court of Law for many miles around he was always appealed to in cases requiring a legal decision, and his judgments were so sound and impartial that the people gave him the name of Judge Lynch. The death sentence was by hanging at the nearest tree. To “lynch a man,” however, in the modern sense is to dispense with legal formalities altogether.
