I had a great aunt when I was growing up in the 50s. She was Appalachian and young mothers in our family were expected to bring newborns to her to make sure they weren't "liver grown." She would move the babies limbs to see if they could reach various points on their bodies. I'm not sure what symptoms she was looking for nor what prognosis would accompany such an affliction. Did anyone else have a family witch doctor like my Aunt Corie?

my mom always told us that if we noched babies or infant animals they would get liver grown. By noching she meant handling them a lot.
