  1. law of constant proportion, law of definite proportionsnoun

(chemistry) law stating that every pure substance always contains the same elements combined in the same proportions by weight

Wikipedia

  1. law of constant proportion

In chemistry, the law of definite proportions, sometimes called Proust's law, or law of constant composition states that a given chemical compound always contains its component elements in fixed ratio (by mass) and does not depend on its source and method of preparation. For example, oxygen makes up about 8/9 of the mass of any sample of pure water, while hydrogen makes up the remaining 1/9 of the mass: the mass of two elements in a compound are always in the same ratio. Along with the law of multiple proportions, the law of definite proportions forms the basis of stoichiometry.

ChatGPT

  1. law of constant proportion

The law of constant proportion, also known as the law of definite proportions, is a principle in chemistry that states that a chemical compound will always contain the same proportion of elements by mass, irrespective of the quantity or source of the original substance. This means that all pure samples of the same chemical compound will have the same elemental composition. For example, water (H2O) will always contain hydrogen and oxygen in a 2:1 ratio by number of atoms and about a 1:8 ratio by mass.
