labyrinthodontia
Labyrinthodontia is a term historically used to group various groups of prehistoric amphibians that have labyrinthine teeth; named for the infolding of the dentine and enamel in the structure of the teeth. These species existed from the late Silurian to the Triassic period. The name 'Labyrinthodontia' is no longer in widespread use as these animals are now distributed among the Lepospondyli, Temnospondyli, and various primitive tetrapod groups.
Wikidata
Labyrinthodontia
Labyrinthodontia is an extinct amphibian subclass, which constituted some of the dominant animals of late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras. The group is ancestral to all extant landliving vertebrates, and as such constitutes an evolutionary grade rather than a natural group. The name describes the pattern of infolding of the dentin and enamel of the teeth, which are often the only part of the creatures that fossilize. They are also distinguished by a heavily armoured skull roof, and complex vertebrae, the structure of which is useful in older classifications of the group. Because labyrinthodonts do not form a natural group, many modern researchers have abandoned the term. However, some have continued to use the group in their classifications, at least informally, pending more detailed study of their relationships.
