In historical novels seem forever talking about kilting up skirts gowns and things. I understand it makes them shorter but how? What they do? tuck all that material in thier equivelent of their knickers? Tie them up with a bit of string they just happen to have or does everyone wear a belt? all have drawstrings? Then they 'shake thier skirs down' or somesuch thing. I cannot visualise it.
