"Kaffir" is now a taboo term in South Africa (and southern Africa more broadly), akin to the N-word. It was a common term during British and Dutch colonial times to describe anything deemed "native" - everything from food to all-African military units. It (apparently) derives from an old Arabic word, meaning unbeliever. Today no-one would use it in any name or descriptions. Indeed, in some news articles where it's necessary to refer to, it is rendered as K****r.
