Wikipedia

  1. Hummock

In geology, a hummock is a small knoll or mound above ground. They are typically less than 15 meters (50 ft) in height and tend to appear in groups or fields. Large landslide avalanches that typically occur in volcanic areas are responsible for formation of hummocks. From the initiation of the landslide to the final formation, hummocks can be characterized by their evolution, spatial distribution, and internal structure. As the movement of landslide begins, the extension faulting results in formation of hummocks with smaller ones at the front of the landslide and larger ones in the back. The size of the hummocks is dependent on their position in the initial mass. As this mass spreads, the hummocks further modify to break up or merger to form larger structures. It is difficult to make generalizations about hummocks because of the diversity in their morphology and sedimentology. An extremely irregular surface may be called hummocky. An ice hummock is a boss or rounded knoll of ice rising above the general level of an ice-field. Hummocky ice is caused by slow and unequal pressure in the main body of the packed ice, and by unequal structure and temperature at a later period.

  1. hummock

A hummock is a small rounded hill, mound, or ridge, typically covered with grass or vegetation, rising above a level or marshy region. They are usually formed by natural processes such as frost heaving, erosion, deposition of sediment, or growth of vegetation. In a broader sense, the term is also used to describe a minor topographic elevation or, in Arctic regions, a small ice hill formed by the pressure of the ice in the sea.

Wikidata

  1. Hummock

A hummock is a boss or rounded knoll of ice rising above the general level of an ice-field, making sledge travelling in the Arctic and Antarctic region extremely difficult and unpleasant. Hummocky ice is caused by slow and unequal pressure in the main body of the packed ice, and by unequal structure and temperature at a later period. An earlier use of this term also refers to lumpy terrain; or land that has an irregular shape; or a fertile, wooded area that is at a slightly higher elevation than nearby marshes or swamps. Hummocks are often made by decaying plants. Hummock is a general geological term referring to a small knoll or mound above ground. They are typically less than 15.1 meters in height and tend to appear in groups or fields. It is difficult to make generalizations about hummocks because hummocks are diverse in their morphology and sedimentology. The term hummock, or hummocky, is also applied to extremely irregular surfaces. This article provides a brief overview of earth hummocks of cryogenic origin and hummocky terrain created by debris avalanches to demonstrate the diverse set of processes that form hummocky landscapes.
