  1. homo erectus

Homo erectus is an extinct species of the genus Homo (Human) that lived approximately 2 million to around 100,000 years ago during the Pleistocene period. This species is known for their significant advancements, including the introduction of systematic hunting, the use of fire, and potentially the development of early forms of language. They are also recognized by their distinct physical characteristics, including a larger brain capacity and a more human-like body proportion compared to earlier human ancestors. Homo erectus existed in Africa, Europe, and Asia, and is widely believed to be an ancestor to modern humans.

Wikidata

  1. Homo erectus

Homo erectus is an extinct species of hominin that lived from the end of the Pliocene epoch to the later Pleistocene, with the earliest first fossil evidence dating to around 1.8 million years ago and the most recent to around 300,000 years ago. The species originated in Africa and spread as far as England, Georgia, India, Sri Lanka, China and Java. There is still disagreement on the subject of the classification, ancestry, and progeny of H. erectus, with two major alternative classifications: erectus may be another name for Homo ergaster, and therefore the direct ancestor of later hominids such as Homo heidelbergensis, Homo neanderthalensis, and Homo sapiens; or it may be an Asian species distinct from African ergaster. Some palaeoanthropologists consider H. ergaster to be simply the African variety of H. erectus. This leads to the use of the term "Homo erectus sensu stricto" for the Asian H. Erectus, and "Homo erectus sensu lato" for the larger species comprising both the early African populations and the Asian populations.

This find really challenged us. We compared the assembled skullcap to all of the other examples of hominins in the Cradle area. Eventually, its teardrop shape and relatively big brain cavity meant we were looking at Homo erectus.
