hinayana
Hinayana, often translated as "lesser vehicle" or "modest vehicle", is a term used in Mahayana Buddhism to classify certain schools of Buddhism that are viewed as foundational, simple, or lesser in practice when compared to the Mahayana sect. These schools include Theravada and some aspects of early Buddhism. It's important to note that the term Hinayana is often considered pejorative and is rarely used by the practitioners of these schools to describe their own practice.

Hīnayāna is a Sanskrit and Pāli term literally meaning: the "Inferior Vehicle", "Deficient Vehicle", the "Abandoned Vehicle", or the "Defective Vehicle", applied to some schools of early Buddhism. The term appeared around the 1st or 2nd century. Hīnayāna is contrasted with Mahāyāna, which means the "Great Vehicle." There are a variety of interpretations as to who or what the term "Hīnayāna" refers to. The Chinese monk Yijing who visited India in the 7th century, distinguishes Mahāyāna from Hīnayāna as follows: The term was widely used in the past by Western scholars to cover "the earliest system of Buddhist doctrine" as the Monier-Williams Sanskrit-English Dictionary put it. However its use is increasingly deprecated, because of its pejorative origins, and uncertainty as to to which Buddhist schools it should cover. It has been used as a synonym for the Theraveda tradition, which continues as the main form of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and South-East Asia, but some scholars deny that the term included Theraveda Buddhism. In 1950 the World Fellowship of Buddhists declared that the term Hīnayana should not be used when referring to any form of Buddhism existing today.
