hepatolenticular degeneration
Hepatolenticular degeneration, also known as Wilson's disease, is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by excessive copper accumulation in the liver or brain. The body's inability to eliminate copper leads to its build-up, causing damage to these organs and sometimes leading to neurological or psychiatric symptoms and liver disease. The condition typically manifests symptoms in individuals aged between 4 and 60, but most commonly in teenagers. The symptoms may vary widely and include jaundice, fatigue, loss of appetite, coordination problems, and behavioral changes.
U.S. National Library of Medicine
Hepatolenticular Degeneration
A rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by the deposition of copper in the BRAIN; LIVER; CORNEA; and other organs. It is caused by defects in the ATP7B gene encoding copper-transporting ATPase 2 (EC 3.6.3.4), also known as the Wilson disease protein. The overload of copper inevitably leads to progressive liver and neurological dysfunction such as LIVER CIRRHOSIS; TREMOR; ATAXIA and intellectual deterioration. Hepatic dysfunction may precede neurologic dysfunction by several years.
