hazan
In Hebrew tradition, a Hazan, also spelled Chazan, is two things: 1) A cantor, a person appointed to lead a Jewish congregation in prayer, especially in synagogues. They sing or chant prayers and lead the congregation in recitations. 2) A person who supervises the kosher status of a ritual bath (Mikvah). The term "Hazan" is mostly used in Sephardic and Mizrahi communities. In Ashkenazic communities, the term "cantor" or the Hebrew term "kha-zn" is used more frequently.
