Wikipedia
Gneiss
Gneiss ( NICE) is a common and widely distributed type of metamorphic rock. It is formed by high-temperature and high-pressure metamorphic processes acting on formations composed of igneous or sedimentary rocks. Gneiss forms at higher temperatures and pressures than schist. Gneiss nearly always shows a banded texture characterized by alternating darker and lighter colored bands and without a distinct cleavage. Gneisses are common in the ancient crust of continental shields. Some of the oldest rocks on Earth are gneisses, such as the Acasta Gneiss.

gneiss
Gneiss is a common and widely distributed kind of metamorphic rock formed by high-grade regional metamorphic processes from pre-existing formations originally either igneous or sedimentary rocks. It is characterized by a distinct banded texture, alternation of lighter layers consisting of minerals like quartz and feldspar, and darker layers of minerals such as biotite and amphibole.
Webster Dictionary
Gneissnoun
a crystalline rock, consisting, like granite, of quartz, feldspar, and mica, but having these materials, especially the mica, arranged in planes, so that it breaks rather easily into coarse slabs or flags. Hornblende sometimes takes the place of the mica, and it is then called hornblendic / syenitic gneiss. Similar varieties of related rocks are also called gneiss
