    Giannitsa is the largest city and a former municipality in Pella regional unit, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform, it has been part of the municipality of Pella, of which it is the seat. Its chief importance is as an agricultural centre. It is 48 km from Thessaloniki. The former shallow, swampy, and variable-sized Giannitsa Lake or Loudias Lake, south of the city, was drained in 1928-1932 by the New York Foundation Company. It or the surrounding marshland are sometimes called Borboros 'slime' or Borboros Limen. About 7 km from Giannitsa are the ruins of ancient Pella, birthplace of Alexander the Great and capital of Ancient Macedonia. The town proper is home to 31,983 people. The community Giannitsa includes a few outlying villages. The municipality as a whole includes many villages and has 63,122 inhabitants.
