Wikipedia
Fried bread
Fried bread is a slice of bread that has been fried. It is used as a substitute for toast in various dishes or meals. Various oils, butter, lard, bacon drippings, or ghee can be used. Some cooks may choose to fry rather than toast to avoid having to give counter or storage space to or spend money on a toaster. Proponents of frying rather than toasting call out the extra flavor and crispiness that can be achieved by frying in fat rather than dry-toasting.French toast is a type of fried bread that is soaked in a batter before frying.
Wikidata
Fried bread
Fried bread, or fried slice, is a slice of bread which is fried, usually in the oil or grease left over after cooking sausages, bubble and squeak or other parts of the traditional English breakfast. Using leftover grease allows the bread to pick up flavors from the rest of the meal. Like the components of many traditional breakfasts, it is a way of using the last of the previous day's food, in this case, day-old or slightly stale bread, much like toast or croutons. The difference is that toast is dry-roasted over an open flame or in an electric toaster, while a slice is fried in grease, butter, or oil. Croutons are diced into small cubes, usually about 3/4" or so, before being lightly sautéed, while a fried slice is left whole. A full English breakfast will often include a fried slice. A traditional Irish breakfast is usually accompanied by soda bread but in Northern Ireland an Ulster fry can contain fried soda farls. When frying bread, if the oil is hot enough it will not soak in past the surface layer. A proper fried slice should not be soggy. Fried bread darkens when done, how dark is a matter personal preference. A fried slice is usually not more than about 1/2 inch thick -- if too thick, it won't fry all the way through and will remain uncooked inside, or the outside will need to be overcooked to cook the inside.
