fehling's solution
Fehling's solution is a chemical reagent used to detect reducing sugars and aldehydes. It is a deep blue alkaline solution which, when heated with a reducing sugar, forms a red to brick-brown precipitate, indicating the presence of the sugar. Fehling's solution is actually a two-part reagent, comprising of Fehling's A, a clear blue solution of copper(II) sulfate, and Fehling's B, a colorless solution of potassium sodium tartrate and strong alkali, usually sodium hydroxide. These are mixed in equal volume to form the working reagent just before use.
