We need to strike the right balance between protecting industry and jobs, and meeting our climate change obligations, i don't think those goals are mutually exclusive, but I do know that the EU ETS as it stands is not delivering either.
The results of fighting coronavirus will be painful. It is obvious that countries will be looking for extra money to help their business and citizens, poland and other countries should take care of the climate on their own, and the ETS should be removed from 1 January, 2021, or at least Poland should be excluded from the system.
A national tax, on top of the ETS, could kill our business, without helping the climate in any way, this is a cut-throat business - if our prices rise too much, demand will move elsewhere.

That will require the UK to keep a huge range of EU policies and it is likely that the EU ETS would be one of them, however, you could see a world where it pulls out of the EU ETS and just keep the carbon tax and argue it's an equivalent measure. Really, all we have now is uncertainty.
We do not believe that the Commission's ETS reform proposal will deliver a carbon price sufficient to maintain the EU ETS as the cornerstone of EU climate policy.
