  1. Enumeration

An enumeration of a collection of items is a complete, ordered listing of all of the items in that collection. The term is commonly used in mathematics and theoretical computer science to refer to a listing of all of the elements of a set. In statistics the term categorical variable is used rather than enumeration. The precise requirements for an enumeration depend on the branch of mathematics and the context in which one is working. Some sets can be enumerated by means of a natural ordering, but in other cases it may be necessary to impose a ordering. In some contexts, such as enumerative combinatorics, the term enumeration is used more in the sense of counting – with emphasis on determination of the number of elements that a set contains, rather than the production of an explicit listing of those elements.

Examples of enumeration in a Sentence

  1. Fast FactsState Sen. Virginia Lyons:

The lack of a definitive enumeration of reproductive liberty in Vermont's constitution, the threat of Roe v. Wade being overturned by a very conservative US Supreme Court and the cloud of a multi-state initative to pass restrictive/punitive laws all build a strong case for Prop 5 to go to the voters.

  2. Justice Department attorney Brad Rosenberg:

It's possible that if Census Bureau provides Census Bureau enumeration at some point in January... that Congress would still accept that number, but it's also possible -- and I don't represent Congress so I just don't know the answer to this -- that they might not. If they miss the statutory deadline, it's unclear whether Congress would still be bound to accept any numbers submitted by the president after the date.
