  1. Dwarfs

Dwarfs in Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels are similar to the Dwarves of J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, to which they largely started out as a homage, and dwarves in other fantasy novels. They are short, stocky, bearded metal-workers, generally seen wearing chain mail and brandishing axes. However, they have many unique qualities. Dwarfs originate from the Ramtops and Überwald, but many have moved down to the Sto Plains. Incidentally, Pratchett uses the plural "dwarfs", not Tolkien's "dwarves", and "dwarfish" instead of "dwarven".

Examples of dwarfs in a Sentence

  1. Gregg Hallinan:

As the electrons spiral down toward the atmosphere, they produce radio emissions, and then when they hit the atmosphere, they excite hydrogen in a process that occurs at Earth and other planets, we now know that this kind of auroral behavior is extending all the way from planets up to brown dwarfs.

  2. Hazlitt:

Society is a more level surface than we imagine. Wise men or absolute fools are hard to be met with, as there are few giants or dwarfs. The heaviest charge we can bring against the general texture of society is that it is commonplace. Our fancied superiority to others is in some one thing which we think most of because we excel in it, or have paid most attention to it; whilst we overlook their superiority to us in something else which they set equal and exclusive store by.

  3. Adam Andrzejewski:

Everyone is under the impression that the EPA is spending money to ‘clean the environment.’ But, it turns out EPA is running a $160 million PR Machine, $715 million police agency, a near $1 billion employment agency for seniors, and a $1.2 billion in-house law firm, the EPA wasting $160 million on public relations dwarfs our recent exposure of their high-end furniture purchases ($92 million).

  4. John Stewart Mills:

A state that dwarfs its men in order that they may be more docile instruments in its hands even for beneficial purposes, will find that with small men no great things can really be accomplished.

  5. Ted Williams:

But there is another class of compact objects called white dwarfs, bigger, the size of the earth. So rather than 10 kilometers in size we are looking at 6,000 kilometers and we’ve just discovered the very first white dwarf pulsar.
