  1. dermatomyositis

Dermatomyositis is a rare inflammatory disease characterized by muscle weakness and a distinctive skin rash. It can affect people of any age, but it's most common in adults in their late 40s to early 60s and children between 5 and 15 years old. The exact cause of this condition is unknown, but it's thought to be an autoimmune disorder, where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. The severity of dermatomyositis can vary greatly, with some people experiencing only mild symptoms, while others may struggle with severe muscle weakness and related complications.

Wikidata

  1. Dermatomyositis

Dermatomyositis is a connective-tissue disease related to polymyositis that is characterized by inflammation of the muscles and the skin. While DM most frequently affects the skin and muscles, it is a systemic disorder that may also affect the joints, the esophagus, the lungs, and, less commonly, the heart.

U.S. National Library of Medicine

  1. Dermatomyositis

A subacute or chronic inflammatory disease of muscle and skin, marked by proximal muscle weakness and a characteristic skin rash. The illness occurs with approximately equal frequency in children and adults. The skin lesions usually take the form of a purplish rash (or less often an exfoliative dermatitis) involving the nose, cheeks, forehead, upper trunk, and arms. The disease is associated with a complement mediated intramuscular microangiopathy, leading to loss of capillaries, muscle ischemia, muscle-fiber necrosis, and perifascicular atrophy. The childhood form of this disease tends to evolve into a systemic vasculitis. Dermatomyositis may occur in association with malignant neoplasms.
