ChatGPT

  1. daisy cutter

A daisy cutter is originally a term used to refer to a type of bomb that is designed to explode above the ground to cause a maximum amount of damage over a large area. It's often detonated just above the ground for its shock wave to cause widespread damage at ground level. The term 'daisy cutter' came about because the explosion is said to flatten everything in the targeted area just as if a huge lawn mower had passed over, leaving the impression of a daisy-filled field having been neatly trimmed. This term was most commonly associated with BLU-82 bomb used by the US military.

During the great depression in the U.S. children were sent to work all day in fields. As they walked into the fields to and from work a path of cut daisies could be found due to how low their metal lunch boxes would hang in their hands, essentially slicing off the tops of flowers. Their metal lunch boxes began being referred to as daisy cutters. Or the children themselves began to be referred to as daisy cutters.

I was told by a friends grandfather who himself worked 10 hour days instead of going to school so his family had extra money during this era.
