Condon is a type of knight. The king of a country is responsible for it's defense. The king controls the sea coast, the borders with other countries and the highest points in the kingdom. Condon or king's hill were mountain scouts looking out from the top of hills and mountains for invading ships usually viking ships arriving in late autumn to pillage the stored up harvest in a daring strike. The Condon would sound the alarm on seeing far off invading pirate ships and the townspeople would rush into the city walls and prepare a stout defense to the pillagers. There were also knights along the seashore, marshals (sea shells) and knights along the borders; marquis. Usually marshes determined the borders between kingdoms so marquis became a very important aristocratic military title. If you served the government for four generations you could request a knighthood from the king when he passed through your area. A knight could become a baron or sheriff who could arrest people, then the count or earl was a judge who could imprison people but all sentences were reviewed by the king or appeals court when the king passed through on this circuit around the kingdom collecting taxes. All of this was romanitized in later centuries out of all recognition with it's original purpose.
