common european ash
The Common European Ash, or Fraxinus excelsior, is a species of flowering plant in the olive family Oleaceae. Native to Europe from Spain to Russia, it is a large deciduous tree that can grow up to 35–43 m tall with a trunk up to 2 m in diameter. Its bark is pale grey and smooth in young trees, becoming thick and vertically fissured in old trees. The leaves are opposite, pinnate, with 7–13 leaflets, and the flowers are small and purple, produced in clusters in early spring before the leaves. The fruit is a winged samara 2.5-4.5 cm long and 5–8 mm broad. It is commonly used for furniture due to the strength and resilience of its wood.
