It indicates that the functional groups are on the same side of the molecule. 2) In Gender Studies: It is used as a term for people whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth. "Cisgender" is often used in contrast to "transgender". 3) In Geography: It refers to locations on the 'near' side of a geographic divide. The usage of "cis" widely varies depending on the context or field it is utilized in.
