    An art whereby sensible bodies contained in vessels, or capable of being contained therein, are so changed, by means of certain instruments, and principally fire, that their several powers and virtues are thereby discovered, with a view to philosophy, or medicine. Boerhaave.

    Etymology: derived by some from χυμος, juice, or χύω, to melt; by others from an oriental word, kema, black. According to the etymology, it is written with y or e.

    Operations of chymistry fall short of vital force: no chymist can make milk or blood of grass. John Arbuthnot, on Aliment.
