There are about 25 species in the genus, with a worldwide distribution. They are mostly South African, and there is one species in South America and four in Australia. Various Carpobrotus species are invasive introduced species in suitable climates throughout the world. C. glaucescens is noted for its salty fruit, a rare property in fruits.
