canzonanoun
A type of instrumental composition based on multipart vocal settings of canzoni, produced chiefly in the 16th and 17th centuries
Wikipedia
Canzona
The canzona is an Italian musical form derived from the Franco-Flemish and Parisian chansons, and during Giovanni Gabrieli's lifetime was frequently spelled canzona, though both earlier and later the singular was spelled either canzon or canzone with the plural canzoni. The use of canzone as the plural is sometimes found in Italian, but is not common. English (and often German) uses the form canzona, with canzonas as the plural.
Wikidata
Canzona
The canzona is an instrumental musical form of the 16th and 17th centuries that developed from the Netherlandish chanson. It differed from the similar forms of ricercare and fantasia in its livelier, markedly rhythmic material and separation into distinct sections. In music, a canzona was a 16th-century multipart vocal setting of a literary canzone and a 16th- and 17th-century instrumental composition. At first based on Franco-Flemish polyphonic songs, later independently composed, the instrumental canzonas, such as the brass canzonas of Giovanni Gabrieli and the keyboard canzonas of Girolamo Frescobaldi, influenced the fugue, and the ensemble canzonas were the direct ancestors of the 17th-century sonata da chiesa.
