Etymology: English, American, Australian? Who knows Im 60yrs old &. i can remember seeing it done in old black & white American movies, mostly westerns i think,(even from the silent era im sure),& those old black & white cartoons from the 20's & 30's. As far as I can remember here in Australia, that was the term used for forcibly ejecting someone from an establishment, usually a bar or similar. Later it was adapted into other uses, such as if you abruptly dismiss someone from the conversation or activity,or let someone know you have absolutly no time for them & 'brush them off', someone might say "mate, you really gave that bloke the bums rush didn't you!"
