  3. Etymology: From either boomken, "shrub, little tree", diminutive of boom, "tree" (compare German Baum, bʰew-) or from bommekijn, "little tree", diminutive of bomme, "tree, barrel". Both can be compared to Baumke or Bäumchen, meaning the same as the other two (German -ke, -chen, Flemish -ken). Note that the English word boom is etymologically related to the aforementioned "Baum", "boom", and "bomme" in the sense of "large stem", or "big tree".

  1. Bumpkinnoun

An awkward heavy rustick; a country lout.

Etymology: This word is of uncertain etymology; Thomas Henshaw derives it from pumpkin, a kind of worthless gourd, or melon. This seems harsh. Bump is used amongst us for a knob, or lump; may not bumpkin be much the same with clodpate, loggerhead, block, and blockhead.
