bumpkinnoun
a short boom or spar used to extend a sail or secure a stay
Etymology: From either boomken, "shrub, little tree", diminutive of boom, "tree" (compare German Baum, bʰew-) or from bommekijn, "little tree", diminutive of bomme, "tree, barrel". Both can be compared to Baumke or Bäumchen, meaning the same as the other two (German -ke, -chen, Flemish -ken). Note that the English word boom is etymologically related to the aforementioned "Baum", "boom", and "bomme" in the sense of "large stem", or "big tree".
Samuel Johnson's Dictionary
Bumpkinnoun
An awkward heavy rustick; a country lout.
Etymology: This word is of uncertain etymology; Thomas Henshaw derives it from pumpkin, a kind of worthless gourd, or melon. This seems harsh. Bump is used amongst us for a knob, or lump; may not bumpkin be much the same with clodpate, loggerhead, block, and blockhead.
The poor bumpkin, that had never seen nor heard of such delights before, blessed herself at the change of her condition. Roger L'Estrange, Fables.
A heavy bumpkin, taught with daily care,
Can never dance three steps with a becoming air. Dryden. In his white cloak the magistrate appears,
The country bumpkin the same liv’ry wears. Dryden. It was a favour to admit them to breeding; they might be ignorant bumpkins and clowns, if they pleased. John Locke.

bumpkin
A short boom or beam of timber projecting from each bow of a ship, where it is fayed down upon the false rail. Its use is to extend the clue or lower corner of the fore-sail to windward, for which purpose there is a large block fixed on its outer end, through which the tack is passed, and when hauled tight down is said to be aboard. The name is also applied to the pieces on each quarter, for the main-brace blocks.
