   Athlone (; Irish: Baile Átha Luain, meaning 'The town of Luan's ford') is a town on the border of County Roscommon and County Westmeath, Ireland. It is located on the River Shannon near the southern shore of Lough Ree. It is the second most populous town in the Midlands Region with a population of 21,349 in the 2016 census.Most of the town lies on the east bank of the river, within the townland of the same name; however, by the terms of the Local Government Act of 1898, six townlands on the west bank of the Shannon, formerly in County Roscommon, were incorporated into the town, and consequently, into the county of Westmeath.Around 100 km west of Dublin, Athlone is near the geographical centre of Ireland, which is 8.85 kilometres (5.50 mi) north-northwest of the town, in the area of Carnagh East in County Roscommon.

   Athlone is a town on the River Shannon near the southern shore of Lough Ree in Ireland. It is the largest town in the Midlands Region. The town is governed by an elected town council, which appoints a Mayor. Athlone is on the border of counties Roscommon and Westmeath. Although the River Shannon forms the historic border between Roscommon and Westmeath, the Local Government Act of 1898 designated all of Athlone as belonging to Westmeath, including areas west of the river. Much recent growth has occurred outside the official town boundaries. Monksland, for example, a suburb on the west side of the town, is not within the official town boundaries, yet it is the most populous area of County Roscommon. The Census of Ireland 2011 recorded the population of the town at 20,153, making Athlone the most populous town in the Midlands and the 17th most populous in the state. Athlone is near the geographical centre of Ireland which is 8.85 kilometres north-northwest of the town, in the townland of Carnagh East in County Roscommon.
