    Argonautidae, known as Argonauts or paper nautiluses, are a species of pelagic octopuses. They are a small group comprising of about seven species. Unique to Argonautidae, females secrete a thin, white eggcase in which they reside. They are most known for their "sail" they create by extending two of their arms to catch the surface winds. Argonautidae are found in tropical and subtropical seas worldwide. Their size typically ranges from 10cm to 30cm.

    Argonautidae is a family of cephalopods encompassing the modern paper nautiluses of the genus Argonauta along with several extinct genera of shelled octopods. All eggcases possessing nodes, ribs, and a double keel, with the exception of those of Kapal batavus, have been assigned to Argonauta. Eggcases lacking these morphological features have been placed in the other Argonautidae genera. Fossil Argonautidae eggcases have been described from Japan, New Zealand, Sumatra, Europe, and California.
