Wikipedia

  1. alligators

An alligator, or just gator, is a large reptile in the Crocodilia order in the genus Alligator of the family Alligatoridae. The two extant species are the American alligator (A. mississippiensis) and the Chinese alligator (A. sinensis). Additionally, several extinct species of alligator are known from fossil remains. Alligators first appeared during the Oligocene epoch about 37 million years ago.The name "alligator" is probably an anglicized form of el lagarto, the Spanish term for "the lizard", which early Spanish explorers and settlers in Florida called the alligator. Later English spellings of the name included allagarta and alagarto.

Out of concern that these wonderful animals might end up being abandoned or euthanized, the zoo started a program years ago to transport any alligators I receive calls about to Croc Encounters, a sanctuary in Tampa, the alligator will be housed here in a quarantine situation and cared for until such time that I can get them to Croc Encounters.

  2. John Whitworth:

I mean it’s pretty horrible, and it’s shocking to think that that could actually happen. We see alligators from time to time but never thought that anything like that could happen.

  3. Laura Lawson:

They wouldn't have expected the old Laura to zip line over alligators, swim with sharks, parasail down waterfalls or any other the other amazing experiences I've had in the last few years.

  4. Lou Pendas:

This is unbelievably rare but could easily have been avoided by proper signage and perhaps building a retention wall to keep the alligators off the beach, the law says you have to take appropriate steps to keep your invitees safe.

  5. Allyson Gantt:

Generally speaking, we do the walks in shallow water, the alligators are typically near deeper water. That said, occasionally we see them in the culverts or a canal near the road where we enter. Once, when I was in a very typical cypress dome with a deep hole in the center, we saw a good-size alligator who was clearly the resident of the deep hole in the center of the dome. Other times, late in the dry season, I've seen alligators left in the few patches of water that remain. We tromped by in the mud, without disturbing the alligator in the water hole.
