Freebase

  1. Whispering

Whispering is an unvoiced mode of phonation in which the vocal cords do not vibrate normally but are instead adducted sufficiently to create audible turbulence as the speaker exhales during speech. This is a somewhat greater adduction than that found in breathy voice. Articulation remains the same as in normal speech. In normal speech, the vocal cords alternate between states of voice and voicelessness. In whispering, only the voicing changes, so that the vocal cords alternate between whisper and voicelessness. Because of this circumstance, there is currently no known possibility to use voice recognition successfully on a whispering person, as the characteristic spectral range needed to detect syllables and words, is not given though the total absence of tone. There also is no symbol in the IPA for whispered phonation, since it is not used phonemically in any language. However, a sub-dot under phonemically voiced segments is sometimes seen in the literature, as for whispered should.

Examples of Whispering in a Sentence

  1. Lydia Child:

That man's best works should be such bungling imitations of Nature's infinite perfection, matters not much; but that he should make himself an imitation, this is the fact which Nature moans over, and deprecates beseechingly. Be spontaneous, be truthful, be free, and thus be individuals! is the song she sings through warbling birds, and whispering pines, and roaring waves, and screeching winds.

  2. Travis Tritt:

All of a sudden, there was a silence that fell across that ballroom. And the only thing you could hear was people whispering-- it's Johnny Cash. It's Johnny Cash. Johnny Cash. And almost like a wave, you could see this crowd of people turn and start slowly moving toward one side of the room.

  3. Deodatta V. Shenai-Khatkhate:

Intolerance to Public Display of Affection (PDA) is not new to Asian cultures such as those from India and China, which have a great history and noble heritage than many others. The Public Displays that are not-so-welcome include kissing, holding hands, hugging, whispering, or touching body parts of each other's in a manner that can be perceived as lack of decency and morality. The jury is still out whether or not Public Display of Affection should be accepted and tolerated. The challenge is to differentiate the PDA that emerge out of love and affection from those out of sexual passion and lust....the former is more noble, being based on love; and hence can probably be tolerated in any culture IMHO.

  4. Marco Rubio:

I stood on the stage and watched Marco … rather indignantly, look at Governor Bush and say, ‘someone told you that because we're running for the same office, that criticizing me will get you to that office,’ it appears that the same someone has been whispering in old Marco's ear too.

  5. Kristin Kagetsu:

If we take it seriously, then other people feel the same way, once there is no giggling and whispering, then we can talk about it and realize it's not something to be ashamed of.
